McCafferty Trophy

The Horizon League annually awards the James J. McCafferty Trophy in recognition of the league's all-sport champion. The trophy is presented in honor of McCafferty, the former Xavier University basketball coach and director of athletics, who served as the conference's first commissioner from 1979 to 1980.

Schools earn performance points based on their finish in all 19 championship sports the Horizon League offers. For the sports of baseball, softball, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, and men's and women's basketball, points are awarded based on combined regular season and championship finish. All other sports are based on finish in the League championship.

No award better exemplifies the values and practices of the Horizon League institutions than the Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor. Awarded annually, it is presented to the one male and one female student-athlete who best exemplify the dignity and high purpose of the Horizon League and its membership.

Coleman served the League as its second commissioner from 1980 to 1984. The former University of Illinois athletics director was instrumental in the League's formative years, working to obtain automatic qualification to NCAA Division I championships and expand the League.
